Propane Leak Leads to Home Explosion in Truro, Mass.
The April 20, 2023, a propane explosion at a home in Truro, Mass was caused by a propane leak, investigators have determined. After a thorough origin and cause investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Fire & Explosion investigation unit, it was determined that the origin of the fire was the basement, and the cause was a propane leak which allowed propane vapors to reach a water heater and furnace. The pilot lights for those devices are “always on” and flammable vapors reaching the pilot of either a water heater or furnace can have disastrous consequences. Burn injury lawyers routinely handle home fires and explosions caused by propane leaks.
Apparently, the propane tank leading servicing the home was manufactured in 1989, and the Massachusetts propane explosion was caused, in part, because the old tank had not been “re-qualified” and thus should not have been filled.
Propane explosions can be prevented if propane safety rules are followed. NFPA 58, the “Liquified Petroleum Gas Code,” contains standards and safety rules which apply to propane companies and premises owners. In Massachusetts, portions of NFPA 58 have been adopted as state law.
